Surviving the Sprint

A mental health guide for IT and tech professionals

By Mahammad Irshad · Consultant Psychologist · Asst. Professor

Introduction: High-Functioning Exhaustion in Tech

Tech culture often rewards overwork as dedication. Late-night deployments, tight sprints and constant context switching can feel normal — until focus fades, sleep suffers and work that once felt exciting starts to feel empty.

Many IT professionals stay highly productive while quietly running on empty. This is high-functioning exhaustion: you keep delivering, but the cost shows up in your body, mood and relationships.

"Take a weekend off" rarely fixes it, because the problem is not one busy week. It is a nervous system that is rarely allowed to switch off.

Calm is not the opposite of ambition. It is what keeps your best thinking available for the long run.
